Wooden hawk Otaka-poppo

Traditional craft the City of Yonezawa (Yamagata Prefecture). These wood carvings in the shape of a hawk are individually handcrafted by artisan woodworkers. The word poppo comes from the Ainu word for “toy.” Otaka, meaning “hawk,” refers to Uesugi Yozan, a famous daimyo of Yonezawa, and symbolizes nobility and splendor.
The shape of hawks body made from especially one tree can see the shape that in the form of the hawk it being made consent to there is not so much cutting plane, is piled up traditionally, and studied. The shape of the wings are especially artistically made.
