{"id":51378,"date":"2026-09-07T12:22:39","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T12:22:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fondazione-delbianco.org\/?p=51378"},"modified":"2026-10-01T07:25:09","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T07:25:09","slug":"florence-green-bay-heritage-relationships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondazione-delbianco.org\/en\/florence-green-bay-heritage-relationships\/","title":{"rendered":"From Florence to Green Bay: Heritage Born from Relationships"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"51378\" class=\"elementor elementor-51378 elementor-50326\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4bc7204 e-con-full e-flex parallax_section_no qode_elementor_container_no e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"4bc7204\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8a05be6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8a05be6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"231\">Cultural heritage is made up of monuments, works of art and objects, as well as the <strong data-start=\"84\" data-end=\"152\">relationships built between people, institutions and territories<\/strong>, the knowledge they share, and the encounters that create lasting connections.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"233\" data-end=\"589\">This is the story told by some of the objects preserved at <strong data-start=\"292\" data-end=\"311\">Palazzo Coppini<\/strong>, home of the Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco \u2013 Life Beyond Tourism: tangible evidence of a relationship that began almost thirty years ago between Florence and the <strong data-start=\"475\" data-end=\"512\">University of Wisconsin-Green Bay<\/strong> and developed through academic exchanges, meetings and cultural initiatives.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"591\" data-end=\"713\">It is a story that shows how heritage can create opportunities for <strong data-start=\"658\" data-end=\"712\">mutual understanding and dialogue between cultures<\/strong>.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"591\" data-end=\"713\">\u00a0<\/p><h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"7lh4mz\" data-start=\"715\" data-end=\"763\">A Relationship That Began in Florence in 1996<\/h2><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"765\" data-end=\"908\">\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"765\" data-end=\"908\">The origins of this relationship date back to <strong data-start=\"811\" data-end=\"819\">1996<\/strong>, during the international architecture seminars organized in Florence by the Foundation.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"910\" data-end=\"1161\">Through the academic relationships developed during those years, also thanks to the collaboration with Professor <strong data-start=\"1023\" data-end=\"1036\">Egon Krak<\/strong> in Slovakia, the Foundation came into contact with <strong data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1106\">Sarah Meredith<\/strong>, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1163\" data-end=\"1335\">That first encounter led to a collaboration that later also involved <strong data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1249\">Ray Hutchison<\/strong>, Professor of Urban Studies, and gradually extended to other areas of the University.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1337\" data-end=\"1529\">The exchanges also brought a delegation from the Foundation to Green Bay, giving continuity to a relationship built through <strong data-start=\"1461\" data-end=\"1528\">education, mobility, academic exchange and personal connections<\/strong>.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1337\" data-end=\"1529\">\u00a0<\/p><h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"tastvr\" data-start=\"1531\" data-end=\"1586\">Signs of a Friendship Between Florence and Green Bay<\/h2><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1694\">\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1694\">Some moments in this story are now represented by objects preserved in the collections of Palazzo Coppini.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1696\" data-end=\"1906\">In <strong data-start=\"1699\" data-end=\"1711\">May 2007<\/strong>, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay awarded <strong data-start=\"1759\" data-end=\"1779\">Paolo Del Bianco<\/strong> an Honorary Degree in Human Studies. The academic gown and diploma he received on that occasion are now preserved in Florence.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1908\" data-end=\"2170\">During the same visit, Mayor <strong data-start=\"1937\" data-end=\"1957\">James J. Schmitt<\/strong> also presented Paolo Del Bianco with the <strong data-start=\"1999\" data-end=\"2032\">keys to the City of Green Bay<\/strong>, further reflecting a relationship that began through university cooperation and gradually came to involve the city and its institutions.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2172\" data-end=\"2288\">These different objects derive their value from the <strong data-start=\"2224\" data-end=\"2273\">story of relationships and mutual recognition<\/strong> they preserve.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2172\" data-end=\"2288\">\u00a0<\/p><h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"1x08la2\" data-start=\"2290\" data-end=\"2332\">Sport as Part of a Community\u2019s Heritage<\/h2><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2334\" data-end=\"2509\">\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2334\" data-end=\"2509\">Among the items from Green Bay preserved at Palazzo Coppini is an object from a world seemingly far removed from academia: an <strong data-start=\"2460\" data-end=\"2508\">American football from the Green Bay Packers<\/strong>.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2511\" data-end=\"2778\">Its presence tells another part of the American city\u2019s identity. Sport can be part of the social heritage of a territory: it creates a sense of belonging, generates shared memories and helps tell the story of a community to people from different cultural backgrounds.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2780\" data-end=\"2937\">Within the Museum, an object like this therefore becomes an opportunity to <strong data-start=\"2855\" data-end=\"2936\">discover a territory through the expressions that shape its life and identity<\/strong>.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2780\" data-end=\"2937\">\u00a0<\/p><h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"e27bul\" data-start=\"2939\" data-end=\"2987\">Leonardo da Vinci: From Florence to Wisconsin<\/h2><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2989\" data-end=\"3091\">\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2989\" data-end=\"3091\">The relationship between the two communities has also generated an exchange in the opposite direction.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3093\" data-end=\"3305\">In <strong data-start=\"3096\" data-end=\"3104\">2014<\/strong>, the Foundation donated a <strong data-start=\"3131\" data-end=\"3160\">bust of Leonardo da Vinci<\/strong> to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, bringing to the American campus a symbol of Italian cultural history and its connection with Florence.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3307\" data-end=\"3517\">The gesture carries a meaning that extends beyond the donation itself: heritage becomes a means through which <strong data-start=\"3417\" data-end=\"3516\">geographically distant territories can share part of their identity and build new relationships<\/strong>.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3519\" data-end=\"3728\">This is the same principle that has guided many of the Foundation\u2019s international initiatives over the years: bringing heritage into new contexts to create opportunities for encounter and mutual understanding.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3519\" data-end=\"3728\">\u00a0<\/p><h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"f8z1ql\" data-start=\"3730\" data-end=\"3794\"><span role=\"text\">Telling the Story of a Territory: <em data-start=\"3767\" data-end=\"3794\">The Spirit of Door County<\/em><\/span><\/h2><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3796\" data-end=\"3984\">\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3796\" data-end=\"3984\">The relationship with Wisconsin is also represented in the Library of Palazzo Coppini through the photographic volume <em data-start=\"3914\" data-end=\"3945\"><strong data-start=\"3915\" data-end=\"3944\">The Spirit of Door County<\/strong><\/em> by Darryl R. Beers, published in 1998.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3986\" data-end=\"4141\">The book tells the story of <strong data-start=\"4014\" data-end=\"4029\">Door County<\/strong>, an area of Wisconsin characterized by a strong relationship between landscape, community and local traditions.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4143\" data-end=\"4340\">Its presence in the collection therefore has a particular significance: sharing a book dedicated to one\u2019s own territory offers others an opportunity to <strong data-start=\"4295\" data-end=\"4339\">discover its places, identity and memory<\/strong>.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4143\" data-end=\"4340\">\u00a0<\/p><h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"1naasfz\" data-start=\"4342\" data-end=\"4389\">Objects That Tell the Story of Relationships<\/h2><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4391\" data-end=\"4467\">\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4391\" data-end=\"4467\">An academic gown, a diploma, the keys to a city, a football, a book, a bust.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4469\" data-end=\"4663\">Individually, they are very different objects. Brought together through the story that connects them, they tell the story of <strong data-start=\"4594\" data-end=\"4662\">almost thirty years of encounters between Florence and Green Bay<\/strong>.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4665\" data-end=\"4886\">This is the principle at the heart of the <strong data-start=\"4707\" data-end=\"4763\">Museum of the Sacredness of Expressions of Gratitude<\/strong> at Palazzo Coppini: preserving objects together with the human and institutional relationships to which they bear witness.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4888\" data-end=\"5038\">The collections thus become a <strong data-start=\"4918\" data-end=\"4980\">map of encounters between cultures, people and territories<\/strong>, in which every gift preserves the memory of an exchange.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4888\" data-end=\"5038\">\u00a0<\/p><h2 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"1nnf3m\" data-start=\"5040\" data-end=\"5074\">Heritage as a Means of Dialogue<\/h2><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5076\" data-end=\"5211\">\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5076\" data-end=\"5211\">This story also offers a concrete example of the vision that guides the <strong data-start=\"5148\" data-end=\"5204\">Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco \u2013 Life Beyond Tourism<\/strong> today.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5213\" data-end=\"5371\">Tangible and intangible heritage can become a space where people with different histories, experiences and identities come to know and understand one another.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5373\" data-end=\"5537\">From Florence to Green Bay, and from Green Bay to Florence, the objects preserved and shared over the years tell a story that extends beyond academic collaboration.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5539\" data-end=\"5650\">They show how <strong data-start=\"5553\" data-end=\"5649\">a relationship can become heritage and how heritage, in turn, can generate new relationships<\/strong>.
