Cloisonné or partitioned enamel is an ancient Chinese technique of applying enamel. The first samples of cloisonné appeared in the XI century in China, perhaps the art of cloisonné came there from ancient Egypt, but it was in China that this technology was perfected, became traditional and has hardly changed since then. The French term “cloisonné” means “placed in a cell”. Partitions made of copper wire are soldered to the metal base of separate areas of enamel of different colors in placed in cells and fired several times, since enamel has the property of shrinking.
