The coat of arms was adopted on March 4, 1968. The upper half shows a star, the symbol of the Hero of the Soviet Union, which was introduced after the heroic defense of the city during the Second World War.
The upper half of the shield also symbolises the Tsaritsyn fortress. The red colour symbolises the braveness and the blood shed for the Motherland.The lower half of the arms shows a wheel, symbol for the many industries in the city. The wheat ears symbolise the fertility of the lands and the city. The blue colour symbolises the Volga river.
