AFTER THE WORKSHOP

Mornings in Florence.

First Morning

Reading about Italian cities at home, they seemed to me as an ordinary cities simply reflecting the spirit of the age, at which they were built. However, visiting several cities, I realized that they not only reflect the era, but continue being in the same period without changing its image. I was walking through the streets of Florence, as if I had moved to the Renaissance, as every stone and brick breathes the past. Also, during these walks, I could deeper understand the creators of the Renaissance. It was not necessary to seek a special source of inspiration, it was enough to go to the Ponte Vecchio, where a wonderful view would open in front you: green fields gradually become gray-blue river, which rushes into the distance to the green mountains, and just above you could find a small artificial waterfall. Well, nature completes the fairy-tale image of the city with its bright colors. Finally, Florence is a fabulous city-museum under the open sky...

Second Morning

Del's Santa Maria - Fyora strikes unusually graceful and at the same time grandiose cathedral with the greatness. The cathedral dominates over shape of the city, accurately appearing against a dark blue firmament. Near cathedrals the beauty of lines and forms, how many its force is perceived not so much. Florentines decided to erect a new city cathedral such, «that it was impossible to demand from human forces and eagerness bigger in the sizes, finer construction». To them it, undoubtedly, was possible.

Inside the cathedral is huge, it is filled with light and air. Instead of traditional feeling of height, infinity of the arches in the Florentine cathedral the immense width is felt. Light smooth walls of a cathedral cause feelings of rest, a pacification and pleasure. Being in Santa-Maria-del-Fyore, it is necessary to feel effect of a dome. The feeling of immersion in this huge space is created, the unification with the world is felt, and during such moments it becomes clear why and for what you live.

Third morning

The sky was filled with clouds. But the sun was wishing us something unpredictable. We went in the middle of the day.  The Boboli Gardens stayed in the middle of the day with opened gates. We stayed in the middle of the day with opened eyes. We went inside. Distinct lines of landscape competed with the distinct lines of sculpture. Different markings suggested us different ways: Meadow of Columns, Island Pond, Lemonhouse, Annalena Grotto, Cypress Lane, Meridian Building, The Knight’s Garden, Neptune Fountain, Anphitheatre, Kaffehaus, Bacchus Square, Forte di Belvedere, Buontalenti’s Grotto, Grotto of Madam. What should I choose? It’s seemed like a great play. But in spite of my choice, I walked among voiceless sculptures and shimmering green. Though were they actually voiceless? There in Boboli, I had a permanent and a clear sense of a mystery surrounding me, some secrets that these trees and sculptures hold for centuries. Obviously, they keep memories of Medici’s offspring playing hide-and-seek, a youth who confesses his love to a girl, hundreds of stories unfolded and words said in these alleys. It was like a special secret language which I was not allowed to decipher, but listen to the whispers.
