BEFORE THE WORKSHOP

Upper Silesia was a south-eastern part of Silesia, a historical and geographical region of Poland. The region is situated in the Silesian highlands, between the upper Oder and upper Vistula rivers.

The Upper Silesian Industrial Area is an agglomeration of 3 million inhabitants. It lays between two big cities important for polish history – Kraków (historic capital of Polish Kingdom) in the east and Wrocław (historic capital of Silesia) and in the west. There are some cities of medieval roots (Gliwice, Bytom, Mikołów, Mysłowice, Pyskowice, Toszek, Będzin, Czeladź, Tarnowskie Góry) and almost just established (Katowice, Sosnowiec, Zabrze, Chorzów, Ruda Śląska, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Siemianowice Śląskie,Świętochłowice, Knurów, Piekary Śląskie). (1)

As usual in history, the border of described area was not constant and it was changed many times. In the Early Middle Ages Silesia was a province of the Kingdom of Poland. Since the 14th century the region became a part oft the Czech Kingdom and then (since the 16th century) a part of the Austrian empire. Very important change was a result of Austrian-Prussian wars; when almost the whole Silesia was incorporated to the Prussian Kingdom. Since the end of the 18th century (Partition of Poland) there was the border of three countries- Prussian Kingdom, Austria and Russia (Sosnowiec, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Będzin, Czeladź). As a result of Industrial Revolution, especially at the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century, a provincial, country area of East Upper-Silesia became one of the biggest industrial areas in Europe, with new urban development. Industrialization brought a great social tension. It was connected with fast development of old historical cites and setting up a new ones. After the Second World War almost the whole Upper Silesia (including the Upper Silesian Industrial Area) returned to Poland.

Every city in is different and has specific features of urban layout and general outlook of center. There are many different ways of perception of advertisements in every single city center.
