Summary of the
1998-1999 International Cultural
Meetings in Florence organised by
FONDAZIONE ROMUALDO DEL BIANCO
Participants: a representative
of the NHK Culture Centre Yokohama (Japan), an architect from the Japan Institute of
Architects Tokyo (Japan), and a professor from Tama Art University Tokyo (Japan).
Participants: groups from the
Schools of Architecture, Prague (Czech Republic), Warsaw and Krakow (Poland), Budapest
(Hungary) and the Art History Institutes of Krakow (Poland) and Budapest (Hungary) met to
work on the project entitled "Research on Interrelations in Architecture of the 15th
Century". The aim of this project was to respond to some of the challenges that are
emerging in Europe at the dawn of the XXI century, such as the discovery of common roots,
beyond any political boundary and/or generation gap, or the expansion of communications
between peoples and cultures thanks to improved mutual knowledge and awareness, or the
active contributions from different cultural fields in order to reach common goals.
During the week the groups
visited the "Opificio delle pietre dure" and specifically the sculpture
restoration laboratory, and the German Art History Institute. They also had an opportunity
to visit the "Castello di Trebbio" and the "Castello di Caffagiolo".
On 20 November 1998 they attended a presentation by various representatives of the Faculty
of Architecture of Florence, of "Progetto Europeo per le cittą darte"
[The European Project for Art Cities].
Furthermore, during their stay
in Florence, thanks to the courtesy of the Government Service for Artistic and Historical
Assets of the Provinces of Florence, Prato and Pistoia, the groups were able to visit the
Uffizi Gallery, the Palatine Gallery (Pitti Palace) and the Academia Gallery. The works by
the teams of students from the various schools were presented on the evening of 20
November 1998 and this event was attended by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic and
representatives from the Institute of Architecture of Tokyo, the NHK Culture Centre
Yokohama and Tama Art University of Tokyo. On 21 November, some professors and students
had an opportunity to visit the "Giardino della Gherardesca".
In co-operation with the
Municipal Authorities of Bydgoszcz and the City of Florence a group of 35 young musicians
from Poland, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, co-ordinated by the Felinska
Nowowiesjskiego International Academy of Music of Bydgoszcz (Poland) performed a splendid
concert on 26 November in the Florentine church of San Felice in Piazza. These guests,
too, had an opportunity to visit the Uffizi Gallery, the Palatine Gallery and the Academia
Gallery. The customary farewell evening honouring the guests was held at the Vivahotel
Alexander on 27 November.
An international group of 10
painters from Moscow (Russia), Warsaw (Poland), Minsk (Bielorussia), Odessa (Ukraine) and
Prague (Czech Republic) attended this meeting. They met for the first time in Florence.
Their project was entitled "Art Show: the influence of Florence Environment on
Artists". During their stay, under the influence of the city landscape and the
Florentine Renaissance heritage, these artists produced works that were displayed in an
interesting exhibit held at the Vivahotel Alexander. The exhibit included other paintings
the artists did in their home countries, to provide more insight about their personal
styles. The exhibit, that met with public acclaim was also visited by many representatives
of Florentine cultural institutions and the public administration. These artists were also
able to see the masterpieces in the Academia Gallery, the Uffizi Gallery and the Palatine
Gallery thanks to the co-operation of the Government Service for Artistic and Historical
Assets of the Provinces of Florence, Prato and Pistoia. The traditional dinner was held at
Vivahotel Alexander on 11 December 1998, and was attended by the president, Paolo del
Bianco.

Participants: groups of
professors and students from the Faculties of Architecture of Warsaw (Poland) and Minsk
(Bielorussia), and from the Academies of Fine Arts of Prague (Czech Republic), Krakow
(Poland), Zagreb (Croatia), Bratislava (Slovak) and Budapest (Hungary). The groups
project was entitled "Collage in Firenze". Essentially, the aim of the project
was to deepen knowledge and friendships among the participating students.
On 27 January the groups visited
the Centro Culturale di Arte Grafica "Il Bisonte". During their stay, thanks to
the courtesy of the Government Service for Artistic and Historical Assets of the Provinces
of Florence, Prato and Pistoia the groups were able to visit the Uffizi Gallery, the
Palatine Gallery (Pitti Palace) and the Academia Gallery. The students from the various
schools presented their works on the evening of 29 January 1998, at the Vivahotel
Alexander. The event was attended by a professor from the Sougoushikaku Gauking -
Institute of Architecture of Osaka (Japan) who was also a guest during the week.
Participants: a group of
professors and students from the Faculties of Architecture of Warsaw (Poland) and the
Department of Monument Conservation of the Faculty of Torun (Poland). The project was
entitled "The Panorama of Historic Town. The protection of cityscape as an element of
its sustainable development". The students tried to determine how it is possible to
conserve the volume and unity of the urban landscape and harmonise old and modern
structures. On 3 February the groups participated in an interesting meeting with the
Director of the Town Planning Service Management. That same day the guests visited the
"Univercity" exhibit, along with a representative of the Department of
Construction Engineering Processes and Methods of the Faculty of Architecture of the
University of Florence. Theses guests too, also had an opportunity to visit the Palatine,
Uffizi and Academia Galleries. The farewell evening was held on 5 February at VivaHotel
Alexander, and awards were presented to the guests of the Foundation project participants
for their works. Two representatives of the Stadische Volkshochschule of Magdeburg
attended this special evening.

Participants: a group of
professors and students from the Department of Monument Conservation of the Faculty of
Architecture of Budapest (Hungary). On 10 February the group attended a lecture by two
faculty members from the Department of the History of Architecture and Restoration of
Architectural Structures to discuss the weeks project that was entitled
"Application of Up-to-Date Monuments Restoration Methods by the Turn of the
Millenary". The professors from the Faculty of Architecture invited the guests to a
meeting with Italian students that was held on 12 February. On the same day the group
visited the Centro Culturale di Arte Grafica "Il Bisonte". The day ended with
the farewell ceremony at the Vivahotel Capitol. During the week the students worked on the
structural elaboration of the project entitled "Gli influssi del Rinascimento
Fiorentino del XV secolo nei Paesi Europei" [XV Century Florentine Renaissance
Influence in European Countries], in order to insert it in the Community Program
"Raffaello". Two guests from the Volkshochschule of Muenster (Germany) and one
professor from the Department of Pediatrics of the University of Tokyo also attended. The
guests were also able to visit some of the national museums in Florence.

- February 22 - March 1 1999
Participants: a group of
professors and students from the Faculty of Art History of the University of Krakow
(Poland). Thanks to the courtesy of the Government Service for Artistic and Historical
Assets of the Provinces of Florence, Prato and Pistoia the groups were able to visit some
of the national museums in Florence. The traditional farewell and award presentation
evening was held on Friday 26 February at the Vivahotel Fleming, along with the ceremony
that concluded the 1998/1999 series of International Cultural Meetings in Florence. These
students, too, worked on the structural elaboration of the project entitled "Gli
influssi del Rinascimento Fiorentino del XV secolo nei Paesi Europei" [XV Century
Florentine Renaissance Influence in European Countries], in order to insert it in the
Community Program "Raffaello". A representative from the Kohgakuin University of
Tokyo (Japan), a professor from Waseda University of Tokyo (Japan) and two representatives
from the Volkshochschule of Magdeburg (Germany) also attended the evenings events.
