The
winner of the first prize of the „Adriano Belli” Vocal Competition in
Spoleto, he made his debut in „Lucia di Lammermoor” by Donizetti in
Florence. During his more than 50 years of long career - he still sings -
Panerai was invited by all of the most important opera theaters as „La Scala”,
„Covent Garden”, „Staatsoper Wien”, „MET”... He had regularly performed at
Salzurg and Aix-en-Provence Festivals for many years.
Among his partners we can mention the greatest singers as Maria Callas,
Renata Tebaldi, Fedora Barbieri, Mario del Monaco, Giuseppe di Stefano,
Carlo Bergonzi, Franco Corelli, José Carreras, José Cura, Raina Kabaivanska,
Monserrat Caballe, Mirella Freni, Luciano Pavarotti.
He recorded many performances for EMI, Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, Cetra,
Ariola, His Master’s Voice, etc., conducted by Herbert von Karajan, Tulio
Serafin, Victor de Sabata, Riccardo Muti, Carlo Maria Giulini, Karl Böhm,
Sir Colin Davies, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Zubin Mehta,...
His voice and stile of acting were highly appreciated by the great
directors, who worked with him - Strehler, Zeffirelli, Visconti...
Rolando Panerai has more than 150 operas in his repertory. His most well
known operatic roles are: Falstaff, Rigoletto, The Count of Luna in „Il
Trovatore”, Marquis of Posa in „Don Carlos”, Giorgio Germont in „La Traviata”
- by Verdi. He has been also the greatest Gianni Schicchi in „Il Trittico”
by Puccini for many years.
In 2001 he took part of the prestigious cast of tv production – film of La
Traviata (as Giorgio Germont), which was directly broadcasted in 125
countries, conducted by Zubin Mehta.
Recently Rolando Panerai has sung at Paris Opera, in Staatsoper Frankfurt
and at Glyndebourne Festival. |
