Project “Smart History”
with the co-operation of the Parco Nazionale Cinque Terre, supported by the European Union Culture 2000

Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre,
24th February - 4th March 2005

An international seminar on the protection and valorisation of the Cinque Terre National Park (Liguria Region) was held; the participants were the following university each of them involved a pool of own experts and scholars in the fields of architecture, agriculture, economics and new technologies.

We remind that the project started by following a suggestion of Michel Bonnette (President of ICOMOS Canada) and the Foundation promoted an International Project for the valorisation of the historical, cultural, social and economical heritage of the Cinque Terre Area Marina Protetta. With the advices of Dr. Romana Krizova the project was approved by the European Union in the Programme “Culture 2000”.

The Cinque Terre National Park is listed in the World Heritage list of UNESCO and represents an area that offers environmental and cultural characteristics that must be preserved and valorised. The project “Smart History” aims at developing the replicable model for preserving national parks suffering from overload of tourism which causes running down of production, landscape and ambience. The original exploitation of area is changing due to new economy and tourist industry. The Cinque Terre Park was selected as a representative for establishing this model which will enable finding solutions for preserving a combination of cultural and agricultural heritage.
A short time ago this park was listed as UNESCO monument of a high value. As such it is a great attraction for tourists. It is important to provide tourists with the right information and to facilitate their stay in Cinque Terre. At the same time it is important to preserve the original heritage. For all these reasons, the “Smart History” project intends to be an interdisciplinary approach for the study of proposals that could contribute to the valorisation of these resources. It follows the first experience of international seminar that the Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation realised on 2002 for the valorisation of the ancient Convent of San Domenico in San Gimignano and intends to replicate the scientific methodology adopted as well as the aims of international integration.
